Poznan – Birthplace of Rabbi Loew |
|
Poznan in west-central Poland had for many centuries proportionally more Jews than any other Polish city. Visitors come here to trace their roots or to see the rich Jewish heritage of the city. Birthplace of Rabbi Loew – creator of the Golem of Prague – and the cartographer / explorer Caspar de Gama, Poznan has had a recorded Jewish presence since the 10th century.
Today’s tiny community recently regained possession of the monumental New Synagogue (1907) on Stawna Street in the heart of the old city. Poznan, now a city of half a million, represents another important piece in understanding the mosaic of Jewish Europe.
